Sonia Palermo, MSN, FNP-C
Family Nurse Practitioner
Sonia Palermo is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner with more than 15 years of clinical experience across multiple areas of healthcare. She is certified through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and has dedicated the most recent years of her career to the field of pain management, helping patients manage complex pain conditions while improving function and quality of life.
Sonia earned both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware. Her education, combined with her broad clinical background, has provided her with a comprehensive perspective on caring for patients with both acute and chronic medical conditions.
Prior to joining Apico Pain and Wellness, Sonia gained extensive experience in geriatric medicine, medical-surgical care, weight management, primary care, and pain management. This diverse background allows her to consider not only a patient’s pain condition, but also the medical, functional, and lifestyle factors that may influence their overall health and recovery.
For more than six years, Sonia has focused her clinical practice on pain management. She believes that effective pain care should be individualized, thoughtful, and centered around each patient’s specific needs and goals. Rather than focusing solely on pain scores, she works with patients to identify meaningful functional goals—such as improving mobility, returning to activities they enjoy, sleeping better, or becoming more independent in their daily lives.
At Apico Pain and Wellness, Sonia is an integral member of the multidisciplinary clinical team. She evaluates and manages patients with a wide range of acute and chronic pain conditions and works collaboratively with the practice’s physicians and other healthcare professionals to develop comprehensive treatment plans. Her approach may incorporate medication management, rehabilitative and conservative therapies, lifestyle modifications, and interventional treatment options when appropriate.
Patient education and shared decision-making are central to Sonia’s approach to care. She takes the time to listen carefully to her patients’ concerns, understand how pain is affecting their lives, and explain their diagnoses and available treatment options in an approachable and understandable way. When interventional treatment is being considered, she helps patients understand the potential role of different procedures so they can make informed decisions about their care.
Sonia’s goal is to build a collaborative relationship with each patient and develop a treatment plan that balances pain relief, improved function, safety, and long-term quality of life.
Outside of work, Sonia enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband, their two active boys, and their rescue dog. Whether at the beach, camping, or hiking, she values an active lifestyle and quality time with her family.
