01The treatment

What Is It?

The erector spinae plane block is an ultrasound-guided fascial plane block used to treat pain involving the chest wall, ribs, thorax, and selected postoperative conditions. It is especially useful when pain from rib fractures makes breathing, coughing, or movement difficult.

02How it works

How Can It Help?

Medication is placed in a tissue plane adjacent to the transverse processes and erector spinae muscles, where it can spread across multiple thoracic levels and influence pain-carrying nerve branches.

What Can Patients Expect?

The block can be part of a multimodal strategy intended to improve breathing, mobility, and participation in recovery. Duration varies based on medication and clinical circumstances.
