Serratus Anterior & Other Fascial Plane Blocks

01The treatment
What Is It?
Fascial plane blocks place local anesthetic within tissue planes where sensory nerves travel. Serratus anterior plane blocks can be useful for selected lateral chest wall and rib pain, while other plane blocks may be chosen for abdominal, thoracic, or postoperative pain.
02How it works
How Can It Help?
Ultrasound guidance allows the clinician to identify the relevant muscle layers and place medication in the desired plane. These techniques can cover a broader region than a single peripheral nerve block.

What Can Patients Expect?
The block selected depends on the location of pain, surgery, or injury. Fascial plane blocks are often combined with other medications and rehabilitation as part of multimodal acute pain care.
