Basivertebral Nerve Ablation (BVNA)

01The treatment

What Is It?

Basivertebral nerve ablation is a minimally invasive treatment for a specific form of chronic low back pain called vertebrogenic pain. This pain is thought to arise from damaged vertebral endplates, which can develop degenerative changes visible on MRI.

02How it works

How Can It Help?

During the procedure, a probe is advanced into the affected vertebral body and radiofrequency energy is used to ablate the basivertebral nerve, reducing transmission of pain signals from the endplates. Careful patient selection is important because BVNA is designed for vertebrogenic pain rather than every type of back pain.

What Can Patients Expect?

Patients are evaluated using symptoms, examination, treatment history, and imaging. Recovery is generally much less extensive than open spine surgery, although soreness after the procedure is expected.
