Understanding the Condition

Back pain can arise from the bones, discs, joints, nerves, muscles, ligaments, or other supporting structures of the spine. It may be felt as a localized ache in the lower, middle, or upper back, or it may travel into the buttocks or legs when a spinal nerve is irritated. Some patients experience stiffness or pain with movement, while others develop numbness, tingling, weakness, or difficulty standing and walking for prolonged periods.

Causes

How It Develops & Common Causes

Spine-related pain often develops gradually from age-related wear, repetitive stress, poor biomechanics, arthritis, or degeneration of the discs and joints. It can also begin after an injury, lifting event, motor vehicle accident, fracture, or previous spine surgery. Common causes include herniated or degenerative discs, spinal stenosis, facet arthritis, vertebrogenic pain, radiculopathy or sciatica, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, compression fractures, spondylolisthesis, and persistent pain after spine surgery. Because several structures may contribute to pain at the same time, identifying the primary pain generator is an important part of treatment planning.
