What Is It?

Epidural steroid injections are image-guided procedures used to place anti-inflammatory medication near irritated spinal nerves. They may be considered when pain travels from the neck into the arm or from the back into the leg, particularly when symptoms are related to a disc problem, narrowing around a nerve, or inflammation.

02How it works

How Can It Help?

Depending on the location and diagnosis, an epidural may be performed through an interlaminar, transforaminal, or caudal approach. Fluoroscopy and contrast are commonly used to confirm accurate placement. The goal is to reduce inflammation around the affected nerve so pain decreases and activity or rehabilitation becomes easier.

What Can Patients Expect?

The procedure is typically outpatient. Patients may feel pressure or temporary reproduction of familiar symptoms during the injection. Relief varies: some patients improve quickly, while others notice benefit over several days. An epidural does not reverse every structural problem, and response helps guide the next step in care.
