Understanding the Condition

Neck pain can involve the cervical discs, facet joints, muscles, ligaments, and nerves that support the head and connect the neck to the shoulders and arms. Symptoms may remain in the neck or spread into the shoulder blade, shoulder, arm, or hand. Patients may also experience headaches, muscle tightness, limited range of motion, numbness, tingling, or weakness when cervical nerves are affected.

Causes

How It Develops & Common Causes

Cervical pain may develop from degenerative disc disease, arthritis of the facet joints, disc herniation, spinal or foraminal stenosis, nerve compression, muscle and myofascial pain, poor posture, repetitive strain, or traumatic injuries such as whiplash. Previous cervical surgery can also lead to persistent or recurrent pain. A careful evaluation helps distinguish mechanical neck pain from nerve-related pain and from headaches that originate in the cervical spine.
