Selective Nerve Root Blocks

01The treatment

What Is It?

A selective nerve root block targets a specific spinal nerve as it exits the spine. It can be used therapeutically to reduce inflammation and, in selected situations, diagnostically to help determine which nerve is responsible for radiating arm or leg pain.

02How it works

How Can It Help?

Using imaging guidance, medication is placed around the targeted nerve root. A focused approach can be especially useful when imaging shows abnormalities at more than one spinal level and the clinical team is trying to match symptoms to the most likely pain generator.

What Can Patients Expect?

Patients are usually able to go home shortly after the procedure. Temporary numbness or heaviness can occur. The pattern and duration of relief provide useful information for future treatment planning.
