Understanding the Condition

Neuropathic pain occurs when a nerve or the nervous system itself is injured, irritated, compressed, or functioning abnormally. Unlike pain caused primarily by inflammation or joint damage, nerve pain is often described as burning, shooting, electric, stabbing, tingling, or hypersensitive. Even light touch can sometimes be painful. Symptoms may occur in a small, well-defined area or involve larger regions of an arm, leg, hand, foot, chest wall, or other part of the body.

Causes

How It Develops & Common Causes

Neuropathic pain can result from diabetes, spine-related nerve compression, surgery, trauma, chemotherapy, shingles, nerve entrapment, amputation, or direct peripheral nerve injury. Conditions such as peripheral neuropathy, radiculopathy, postherpetic neuralgia, painful diabetic neuropathy, meralgia paresthetica, intercostal neuralgia, occipital neuralgia, and other focal neuralgias fall within this category. Because nerve pain may persist even after the original injury has healed, treatment often combines medication, rehabilitation, targeted nerve procedures, and neuromodulation.
