Sympathetic Nerve Blocks

What Is It?
The sympathetic nervous system helps regulate blood flow, sweating, temperature, and other automatic functions. In certain pain conditions, sympathetic activity can become linked to persistent pain, sensitivity, color or temperature changes, and swelling.
How Can It Help?
Examples include stellate ganglion blocks for selected upper-extremity conditions and lumbar sympathetic blocks for selected lower-extremity pain. Local anesthetic is placed near the sympathetic nerves under imaging guidance to assess and potentially reduce sympathetically maintained pain.
What Can Patients Expect?
A temporary change in warmth or other autonomic effects may occur after a successful block. The response helps guide whether additional sympathetic treatment, rehabilitation, or neuromodulation should be considered.
