Understanding

Understanding the Condition

Chronic pain is pain that persists beyond the expected period of healing and may continue for months or years. In some patients, the original injury remains active; in others, the nervous system becomes increasingly sensitive and continues to generate or amplify pain signals. Complex pain conditions can affect sleep, mood, mobility, work, relationships, and overall quality of life, and they often involve more than one pain generator.

Causes

How It Develops & Common Causes

Examples include complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), persistent spinal pain syndrome, chronic postsurgical pain, fibromyalgia, chronic widespread pain, refractory neuropathic pain, and pain that continues despite previous procedures or surgery. These conditions may involve changes in nerve signaling, inflammation, central sensitization, altered movement patterns, deconditioning, and psychological or sleep-related factors. Successful care usually requires a coordinated multimodal strategy rather than a single treatment.
