Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS)

What Is It?
Peripheral nerve stimulation delivers electrical stimulation directly to a selected peripheral nerve or nerve region. It may be considered for focal chronic pain when a specific nerve can be identified as an important contributor.
How Can It Help?
Depending on the system and condition, PNS may be temporary or implantable. The stimulation is intended to change pain signaling while allowing treatment to remain focused on the painful region rather than the spinal cord.
What Can Patients Expect?
Candidates are selected based on the pain pattern, diagnosis, prior response to nerve blocks or other treatments, and functional goals. PNS can be considered for selected neuropathic, postsurgical, headache, chest wall, or musculoskeletal pain syndromes.
