Understanding

Understanding the Condition

Headache and facial pain disorders can range from episodic migraine to chronic daily headache, occipital neuralgia, cervicogenic headache, trigeminal neuralgia, and other craniofacial pain syndromes. Symptoms may include throbbing or pressure-like head pain, sensitivity to light or sound, nausea, pain behind the eye, scalp tenderness, neck-related headache, or sudden electric-shock-like facial pain. The pattern of symptoms helps determine which nerves, joints, muscles, or headache mechanisms may be involved.

Causes

How It Develops & Common Causes

These conditions may arise from migraine biology, irritation of the occipital or trigeminal nerves, cervical spine disease, muscle tension, trauma, or dysfunction within pain-processing pathways. Some patients have overlapping causes, such as migraine combined with neck pain or occipital neuralgia. Treatment is therefore individualized and may include medication, Botox, targeted nerve blocks, cervical procedures, radiofrequency techniques, or neuromodulation for carefully selected refractory cases.
