01The treatment

What Is It?

The greater and lesser occipital nerves provide sensation to much of the back and top of the scalp. Irritation of these nerves can contribute to occipital neuralgia and may overlap with migraine or cervicogenic headache.

02How it works

How Can It Help?

An occipital nerve block places medication around the nerve to reduce pain and help determine how much the occipital nerve contributes to the headache pattern. In selected cases with a favorable diagnostic response, additional radiofrequency or neuromodulation options may be discussed.

What Can Patients Expect?

Relief may be temporary or longer lasting depending on the condition. The response can also help distinguish occipital neuralgia from other headache generators.
