Trigeminal Nerve & Branch Blocks

What Is It?
The trigeminal nerve provides sensation to much of the face and can be involved in trigeminal neuralgia and other craniofacial pain syndromes. Targeted blocks of the trigeminal nerve or its branches may be used to help diagnose and treat selected pain patterns.
How Can It Help?
The exact approach depends on which facial distribution is painful. Image guidance may be used depending on the target. A diagnostic response can help clarify whether the targeted nerve is a meaningful contributor to symptoms.
What Can Patients Expect?
Temporary numbness in the treated distribution is expected with local anesthetic. Depending on the diagnosis and response, additional treatment may include medication, radiofrequency procedures, or neuromodulation.
