Understanding the Condition

Musculoskeletal pain includes conditions affecting the joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, bursae, and other soft tissues. It may involve the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle, foot, or surrounding structures. Patients often notice aching, stiffness, swelling, tenderness, reduced range of motion, or pain with walking, exercise, lifting, reaching, or other everyday activities.

Causes

How It Develops & Common Causes

Common causes include osteoarthritis, overuse, sports injuries, tendon and ligament disorders, bursitis, degenerative changes, prior trauma, repetitive strain, and persistent pain after joint surgery or replacement. Pain may also come from the sensory nerves surrounding a joint rather than the joint surface alone. Treatment is based on the specific structure involved and may combine rehabilitation, medication, image-guided injections, regenerative medicine, nerve procedures, or radiofrequency treatment.
