Intrathecal Drug Delivery

What Is It?
Intrathecal drug delivery uses an implanted pump to deliver very small amounts of medication directly into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord. It is reserved for carefully selected patients with severe pain that has not been adequately controlled with other strategies.
How Can It Help?
Because medication is delivered close to its site of action, intrathecal therapy can sometimes achieve an effect with much smaller doses than systemic treatment. Pump therapy requires long-term follow-up, refills, programming, and monitoring.
What Can Patients Expect?
Evaluation is comprehensive and may include a trial or other screening depending on the indication. Patients must understand the responsibilities of pump maintenance and the potential risks of an implanted drug-delivery system.
