Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression (MILD)

01The treatment

What Is It?

Minimally invasive lumbar decompression is designed for selected patients with lumbar spinal stenosis and neurogenic claudication, particularly when thickened ligament contributes to narrowing of the spinal canal. Typical symptoms include leg discomfort, heaviness, weakness, or limited walking that improves with sitting or bending forward.

02How it works

How Can It Help?

Through a small percutaneous access point, small portions of excess ligament and bone are removed to create more room within the spinal canal. The procedure is performed without the large incision or extensive tissue disruption associated with open decompression surgery.

What Can Patients Expect?

MILD is not appropriate for every cause of spinal stenosis. Evaluation includes symptoms, imaging, functional limitations, and prior conservative treatment. The goal is to improve standing and walking tolerance while reducing stenosis-related symptoms.
