Intercostal Nerve Blocks

01The treatment

What Is It?

Intercostal nerves travel beneath each rib and carry sensation from the chest and abdominal wall. They can become painful after rib fractures, surgery, shingles, trauma, or nerve injury.

02How it works

How Can It Help?

Using anatomic landmarks and often ultrasound guidance, medication is placed around the affected intercostal nerve. The block can provide therapeutic relief and help confirm the source of band-like chest wall pain.

What Can Patients Expect?

Temporary numbness in the treated rib distribution can occur. For persistent neuralgia, additional options may include radiofrequency procedures or peripheral nerve stimulation in selected patients.
