01The treatment

What Is It?

The ganglion impar is a small sympathetic structure located near the front of the sacrum and coccyx. It can transmit pain from the perineum, distal rectum, anus, coccyx, and nearby pelvic structures.

02How it works

How Can It Help?

A ganglion impar block uses imaging guidance to place medication near this structure. It may be considered for selected coccygeal, perineal, pelvic, or cancer-related pain.

What Can Patients Expect?

The procedure is generally outpatient. The degree of relief can help determine whether the ganglion impar is an important component of the pain pathway and whether additional treatment is appropriate.
