Understanding

Understanding the Condition

Pelvic, abdominal, and groin pain can originate from nerves, muscles, joints, scar tissue, the abdominal wall, pelvic structures, or internal organs. The pain may be deep and aching, burning, sharp, pressure-like, or highly localized. Some patients experience pain with sitting, movement, bowel or bladder activity, intercourse, or after abdominal, pelvic, or hernia surgery.

Causes

How It Develops & Common Causes

Potential causes include pudendal neuralgia, ilioinguinal or genitofemoral neuralgia, abdominal wall nerve entrapment, pelvic floor dysfunction, coccygeal pain, postsurgical nerve injury, hernia-related pain, visceral pain syndromes, and other pelvic neuropathies. Because symptoms can overlap with gastrointestinal, gynecologic, urologic, or surgical conditions, appropriate evaluation and coordination with other specialists may be necessary before interventional pain treatment is considered.
