Superior Hypogastric Plexus Block

01The treatment

What Is It?

The superior hypogastric plexus carries pain signals from pelvic organs and structures. A block may be considered for selected chronic pelvic or cancer-related pain when visceral pain pathways are believed to be contributing.

02How it works

How Can It Help?

Using imaging guidance, medication is placed near the plexus in the lower abdomen/pelvic region. The goal is to reduce transmission of visceral pain signals while preserving normal motor function.

What Can Patients Expect?

Because pelvic pain has many possible causes, appropriate gynecologic, urologic, gastrointestinal, oncologic, or surgical evaluation may be necessary before a plexus procedure is recommended.
