10Where does it hurt?

Hip

Step 1

Common symptoms

  • Pain in the groin, outer hip or buttock
  • Pain with walking, stairs or rising from a chair
  • Stiffness after rest
  • Pain on the outside of the hip when lying on it
  • Persistent pain after hip replacement
Step 2

Conditions we treat

The condition pages that cover pain in this area.

Step 3

How we evaluate

Your visit starts with a comprehensive evaluation: your history, a focused musculoskeletal and neurologic examination, and a review of any imaging or diagnostic studies you already have. When it helps to pinpoint the source of pain, we use diagnostic nerve blocks or ultrasound-guided assessment before recommending treatment.

Groin-dominant pain points to the hip joint, outer hip pain to the trochanteric bursa or gluteal tendons, and buttock pain to the sacroiliac joint or spine.

Treatment options
